DESCRIPTION:
The first of two volumes, this study focuses on Cram's early architectural and literary work.. The first major biography of Ralph Adams Cram (1863-1942), America's greatest church architect, this book offers a portrait of America's earliest avant garde, Boston's little known fin-de-siecle bohemia, in which Cram figured as leader, editor, art critic, poet, and designer. Disclosing for the first time the pivotal contribution of Boston's emerging gay subculture to New England's intellectual and cultural history, Douglass Shand-Tucci explores the relationship between artistic creativity and sexual orientation and between homosexuality and High Church Anglicanism

(Peter J. (Christopher Lydon, host of "The Connection," National Public Radio)Gradually reveals something very interesting: a part of the history of Boston a complex, vivacious little community, caught in the historical moment that made it possible. News websites have been recently featuring photos of a vandalized, ruined church in Detroit. I was just at the point in this book where Shand-Tucci is talking about Cram's architectural efforts in Detroit when I saw the news photos. I just know that this is one of Cram's churches! I was rather overwhelmed by the size and weight of this book, and pe. I grew up with Ralph Adams Cram and this is a great introduction to the artist and his era. Lockett F. Ballard John Nicholas Brown blessed St. George's School in Newport, RI with one of the great examples of Cram's gothic revival chapels. Evening services every night in that glorious soaring space and serving as an acolyte many Sunday's in the beautiful chanel drew me to this exceptionally well written history of Cram and his early life, the artistic circle
