Excellent Book on the Subject! SecretSanta I have used this book for several quarters as I earn my Masters in Counseling Psychology. I knew nothing of Kohut or self psychology before I entered this program, and have found this book to be an outstanding foundational read. If you are new to the subject, read it cover to cover. You should have a handle on the basics of of self psychology, Kohut, self object, etc, by the end of Part I. It's clearly written, uses loads of examples, and explains new terms carefully. Great text!. Anna Kamarul said it's a great place to start. Very accessible but powerful overview of Kohut's ideas and the practice of self psychology. If you're interested in the self psychology methodology, it's a great place to start. More broadly, it is also very helpful in describing how attachment injuries play out and heal.. Well, they quote Kohut as believing that, for example, conflicts arose out of the child's unresolved desire to have sex with the parent of the opposite sex.
