McGraw-Hill’s version of the book a year later brought it to mainstream bookstores across the country.Patience & Sarah is a historical romance whose drama was a touchstone for the burgeoning gay and women’s activism of the late 1960s and early 1970s. “A remarkable story.”—Publishers WeeklySet in the nineteenth century, Isabel Miller’s classic lesbian novel traces the relationship between Patience White, an educated painter, and Sarah Dowling, a cross-dressing farmer, whose romantic bond does not sit well with the puritanical New England farming community in which they live. They choose to live together and love each other freely, even though they know of no precedents for their relationship; they must trust their own instincts and see beyond the disdain of their neighbors. It celebrates the joys of an uninhibited love between two strong women with a confident defiance that remains relevant today. This edition features an appendix of supplementary mater

"An ideal read for lesbians or bi women." according to Ariel Durkee. I loved this book so much. Every woman who loves women should read this. I listened to it while I was at work and was smiling like and idiot and sighing lovingly for much of the book. It has many heartbreaks, but also a sense of hope that pervades. I fell hard for Sarah, she was such a beautiful, robust but delicate character.. "classic!" according to V. Brooks. Such a good classic. Very heartwarming. Warm and Humorous A Customer Miller's writing ability is to be highly commended. She manages to combine warmth, love and humor into each page. Having read one too many "small blond" books, it's refreshing to find a lesbian love story in which the writing technique does not become irritating after the first chapter. Also, this book contains no elderly, non-judgemental housekeepers. The women have to figure things out all by themselves.Best line in the book: "I'm not playing you, Darling, I'm landing you."
