DESCRIPTION:
Strong, sassy, always surprising—and titled after a Saturday Night Live “Weekend Update” monologue by Tina Fey—Bitch Is the New Black is a deliciously addictive memoir-in-essays in which Helena Andrews goes from being the daughter of the town lesbian to a hot-shot political reporter… all while trying to answer the question, “can a strong, single, and successful black woman ever find love?” Fans of Sloane Crosley (I Was Told There’d Be Cake) will love the bold and brassy Bitch Is the New Black.
Fans of her acerbic wit will appreciate this collection of essays. She recounts adventures with her dog Miles, who apparently—to her embarrassment—hates black men, and her search for Mr. From Booklist At 28 years old, having survived a tortured childhood raised by a peripatetic lesbian mother and a career as one of the few black writers for the New York Times and the only one for Politico, Andrews has surpassed the stereotype of the strong black woman and been deemed “perfect girl” by a boyfriend desperately trying not to commit. We were surprised to learn that NONE OF US liked this read! It was surprisingly sophomoric. Do young women really take this much BS from men? Ms. Andrews is obviously a smart, talented young woman with a turbulent childhood and 'man' and 'mother' issues. We all wondered who the intended audience was. A real self-absorbed, look-how-clever-I-am absolute zero, but the rating system doesn't accommodate that. I'm not sure why this book was published. I'm fairly certain whatever it was had nothing to do with the author's work.. SND said Great, Easy Read. I heard good things about Bitch is the New Black, but hadn't yet checked it out for myself. I decided to buy it for the Kindle since it was a little cheaper, and the only thing I could think was "why did I wait so long?"Helena's writing draws you in and leaves you in stitches. I found it akin to reading successive blog entries. Easy to get through, with the subject readily laid out and available to you. As a "Great, Easy Read" according to SND.
