As I was not able to attend the actual exhibition, I cannot review this book in relation to what was displayed there. The scope of this book is roughly Byzantium and the early centuries of Islamic rule in the Near East. The book is composed of just under two-hundred entries on art. 3-1261 and Byzantium: Faith and Power (1261-1557)) and this one is no different. As I was not able to attend the actual exhibition, I cannot review this book in relation to what was displayed there. The scope of this book is roughly Byzantium and the early centuries of Islamic rule in the Near East. The book is composed of just under two-hundred entries on art. George Hand said Byzantium and Islam. This is something of a specialist book. It covers a period and subject matter generally swept under the rug by the periodization centered history of art: that time during which Muslims were borrowing art from Christians and a bit of vice versa as well, and there was some general interweaving of styles. There are few "blockbuster" pictures; the commentaries are probably very good but not frightfully eye-catching, and I have yet to read them. I would suggest reading the fascinating review of the book by Peter Brown in Th. Little seen age of transition sablich Another subject very little seen in most art history books, while the truth is there was an intense trade between the two, not only in commerce but also in art. This book fills a gap in art history (at least for the common reader).
