The book is divided into three sections that correspond to three eras in the history of the discipline: *the founding period (1880s to 1920); *the rise to prominence period (1920 to1960); and *the modern period (1960 to the present). Each section begins with an overview chapter describing the period in terms of key social, political, and historical events affecting educational theory, research, and practice. Core Text for Educational Psychology This book has excellent information about the theory and history of educational psychology. My only beef with the book is that there are several typographical errors in it. It's a pet peeve of mine, but it does distract from the reading when you see obvious errors.. Some chapters are better written than others Some chapters are better written than others. We used this textbook in a graduate course. Not the worse history/philosophy book, but I am sure a better one might exist. Wish there were other chapters on other theorists.. "Issues important to teachers" according to John Edward Coumbe-lilley. I found this book a good starting point in graduate level courses that I teach because it provides a historical framework for discussing issues of importance to teachers using seminal work in the field. The authors have a great track record and are prolific in the Ed Psych. I wanted this text because of its purpose and content.

It is likely to become required reading for graduate students in educational psychology and a fixture in the libraries of all who wonder how the marriage of education and psychology came to be and how it has evolved since the union.
