About the AuthorJuliana Maantay

"GIS for the Urban Environment" according to GIScience. This is truly a wonderful book. Although I plan on using it as a text book for some of the courses which I teach, it is also a fantastic reference and refresher for even experienced geographers. To my knowledge, it is the most complete and well written book dealing with GIS in an urban setting. The text is clear and simple without being simplistic, the labs are well designed and do a good job putting theory into practice, and the case studies are varied and interesting. Kudos to Maantay and Zeigler for writing what is sure to become the indispensable Urban GIS text.. Great for Teaching Classes Sarah Williams For years I have been looking for the perfect text book for GIS and Urban Planning and I have finally found it. This text book creates a solid foundation for Urban Planners who want to learn GIS.. B. Andrews said Great reference for GIS. The book is chocked full of great reference material a text book that will make the transition to reference book as soon as your class ends. I purchased it for a class and plan to keep it. It is not a book that teaches you how to use ArcMap, but helps you to think through things like themes, setting scales, deciding projection systems, etc.
