While I am far from a literary critic, Rene' "nails" it with an easing flowing, well-written memoir. Much of his book brings back so many memories of my childhood. I too grew up in the great community of Croton-on-Hudson and knew a few of the people in Rene's "documentary".. "It's all in the title-A Life of Travel, Tragedy, and Triumph" according to walter fitzgerald. This is very well written, honest, and passionately expressed true life story. It tells of a boy who has to deal his high intelligence yet diffidence, and erratic behavioral problems that later turn out to be related to readily curable medical issue. This is against a background of a father who is a famed travel film maker and pianist but someone seriously flawed because of his growing addiction to alcohol. Confronting all of this was a stoic and nurturing mother faced with raising three children
René candidly discusses coming to grips withhis father's slow descent into alcoholism, a diseasethat eventually played a role in Pop's untimely death.Part memoir and part travelogue, Like Pop, LikeSchling is at times tragic, adventurous, and nostalgic. It is ultimately a story of hope as René encouragesthose struggling with substance abuse to have themettle to change their lives and to conquer theirdemons before the demons conquer them.. When he was just four years old, René Paul de laVarre earned the nickname "schling," meaning rascalin his native German language. His journey paysparticular tribute to his relationship with his father, referred to as Pop-a talented filmmaker, pianist, andwriter. He admits to havinga wild side from a young age and spending much ofhis life like a wandering nomad in the quest forknowledge and adventure. This memoir retraces René's footsteps throughAmerica, Europe, the Mediterranean, and the MiddleEast over the course of fifty years
