Five Stars Mike Sitorius fantastic photos. Photography disappointing. Scott Heppel The selection of photographic images of the national parks was very disappointing. When I saw this book, I was hoping to see photographs that would compel me to visit elements of the Nationsl Park System that I had not previously visited. I was hoping to see photographs that were comparable in quality to some past exhibits of national park photography that have toured american museums. By that standard. This book fell very short.. Awesome book! This book is amazing! It examines the relationship between photography and the National Parks--how the parks and photography "grew up" together and also how photographs frame how we understand and envision the parks through established "views". It's so insightful! The pictures are amazing. They range from the very first photographs of the parks in the mid-19th century to photographs by contemporary artists.

You might be surprised by just how important a role photography played in constructing what America thinks of as national parks today –SmithsonianThis striking and comprehensive collection of images reinforces Wallace Stegner’s proclamation that the national parks were America’s best idea. –Travel + LeisureThe book’s visual range is as broad and diverse as the parks themselves… –Travel + Leisure
