DESCRIPTION:
Dear Oprah: How I Beat Cancer and Learned to Love Daytime TV is the tale of a battle with an unusual cancer. There is no five year plan. There is only today and it is Wendy's goal to make the best of every day. With the help of her mother, her husband, her family and friends, Wendy was able to beat cancer and overcome the depression that threatened to overwhelm her. No ten year plan. It is not meant for the faint of heart. It includes Web sites and specific information for anyone suffering from cancer, but particularly for those who battle colorectal cancer. There's never a good time to get cancer but Wendy wrote this book to explore all areas of the cancer experience, including how to survive, how to recover, and how caregivers and friends can support their loved ones. If you liked the movie 50/50 and the television show The Big C, you'll enjoy this memoir. Wendy was diagnosed with rectal cancer just as her career was accelerating, her son was finishing his last year at college and her daughter was planning a wedding. Trapped at home during the daytime for the first time in her life, she learned to appreciate daytime TV talk shows, the wild lives of celebrities and also learned how to slow down and enjoy life. "Dear Oprah" according to Lois Hamon. Intense, candid and really mind boggling that this author had the courage to tell it like it is. Wendy's memoir of her experiences from the time of diagnosis through the second set of chemo after surgery was the best I have ever read. This author spoke of things most patients worry about but seldom have the courage to ask questions or discuss. The appendixes are excellent. They are accurate and very helpful for the people who are trying to find their way in a new and terrifying world. Every single reader will benefit from this story plus those people they share this information with when needed. I am a nurse. Well-written, generous, and no punches pulled It seems a little strange to feel so positive about the story of someone's cancer journey, but this book is as funny and generous. Thornton doesn't pull any punches about the difficulties of cancer or its treatment. Nor does she present cancer as glorious battle that has made her better person. Thornton doesn't present herself as hero or martyr; she is a strong and willful woman, no doubt about that, but she is also a good writer who got sick and decided to share. She does a wonderfully balanced job of presenting the terrors, humor, and practical details of illness. Her stories of hospital snafus are spot on. "Fascinating journey" according to PlayFascinating journey Play4u A vulnerable look at the impact cancer had on the author's life. It also offers great tips and insight if you are either going through this yourself or close to someone experiencing it. Humorous, sobering and interesting.. u.
