DESCRIPTION:
This rewarding book should add a 'large fuel' of its own to the debate over our endangered wilderness." --Kirkus. He begins as a single man, enjoying the heady freedom of his summertime release from college, and ends when he is married and a father, a veteran fighting his last gritty battle against the flames before regretfully packing up like a successful professional athlete who has stayed two or three seasons too long. This book, full of human detail, brings us to the front lines, and we learn what fires mean to the fire-crew foreman (an empire to rule over, if only for a summer) and to the individual firefighter (not the least is plenty of overtime if the struggle against a minor blaze can be stretched out). Paul B. said had purchased several books by this author because I enjoy reading about wildland fire fighting and he seems to. I had purchased several books by this author because I enjoy reading about wildland fire fighting and he seems to be the self delared expert on the subject. After attempting to read this book, and reading part of several others, I sold all of his books. His writing style is far too annoying and pretentious for me to be able to enjoy the read or follow the story. His writing smacks of the kind you would expect from someone with a PHD who is writing books about a blue collar trade done by salt of the earth people. What I really want in a WFF read is ju. "Incredibly entertaining, educational, and sweeps you away to" according to Lucky 7. Incredibly entertaining, educational, and sweeps you away to a world full of smoke, canyons, and a wall of flame. I've had this book since it came out years ago, my old paperback got traded in for a hard back so I could read it again.. Simply the best Carol Collins I have long been a fan of Stephen J Pyne who is, in my opinion, the best author on fire in the world. Some of his books do get a bit technical but he always realizes he is sailing over his readers' knowledge level and quickly brings it back down for the non-professional reader.I have read many of his books but somehow missed this one. It is, in essence, a more personal volume than his other books because it relates his experience fighting fire. That closeness to the flames is an added bonus to his library of work.If you have read Pyne, you know what
