And thus were born the Middletown Pacemakers in 1951. ÃÃ. When the hot rodders were not busy upgrading their drive train for more horsepower or ìchoppingî and ìchannelingî for improved performance, they could often be seen on the streets of Middletown feeding expired parking meters or rescuing motorists whose cars had broken down or run out of gas. Hot Rodding began in Southern California in the 1930s and had spread throughout the United States by the mid 1950s, spawning the sport of drag racing and the advent of the Detroit ìmuscle carsî of the ë60s and ë70s. Hot Rod Magazine and the National Hot Rod Association promoted the formation of responsible car clubs to combat the delinquent reputation of hot rodders, earned through illegal street races and HollywoodÃs portrayal in ìBî movies. By 1966, as was the fate of so many hot rod clubs, the mass production of Detroit muscle cars ushered the Pacemakers to fold. "Great book in which I found historical info of my hometown area." according to Laura L. Mullen. Great book covering a local area car club and it's members, vehicles and drag racing exploits in the early days. I grew up in Hamilton, OH and remember Lovelace Radiator and knew some of the names referenced in the book. A great nostalgic look back. Very enjoyable and wish I had found it sooner!. I'd heard about their show at the amusement park from older guys in Ohio I car show with sometimes. When I found out about the book I had to have it. I gotta say it was worth every penny I paid for it. The history is well documented but at the same time it's entertaining. I'm sure there are parts that would bore a non-gearhead but I liked the story. Having been in a car club the majority of my life I can relate to alot of the stories in this book.
